THE Zontians have always drawn out the best of their peers and friends especially in participating in worthy causes. In 1987, we had our first big fund raising project, Glamour and Glitz chaired by Felisa Chiongbian for the construction of our first Day Care Center in Ermita. Then, more projects came, like the micro-financing in Budlaan to assist small players in livelihood business; the Pink Center with Zonta 2; adopt-a-school program at Gothong Elementary School; the scholarship, cultural and educatio

MARGOT Osmeña yesterday thanked Cebu City's children for their prayers, which she said helped in the successful operation that removed Mayor Tomas Osmeña's cancer-stricken urinary bladder last April. That, as she said it is just "wishful thinking" for detractors to say that the mayor is on extended leave because he is sick, after last month's follow-up medical checkup in the US. The mayor, she said yesterday, was in Bacolod City attending to his mother after a trip to the cities of Zamboanga and Davao

I’m the wife. You think that I would agree (for him to travel frequently) if he is really sick? My husband’s health is very important. But no matter what I say, it’s on their (critics) minds already   -MARGOT Osmena

Rep. Antonio "Tony" Cuenco (Cebu City south district) will run for mayor under the opposition party, according to opposition leader Jonathan Guardo. Guardo yesterday said that Cuenco agreed to be the opposition party's standard bearer in the next election, completing the opposition's "final four" contenders for Cebu City's top posts. Guardo said that the opposition met last Friday to form "TAMA," standing for Tony Cuenco, former city mayor Alvin Garcia for vice mayor, Lahug barangay captain Mary Ann d

We’ll wait for that announcement. The opposition always says they’ve finalized their lineup, they’ve done that before   -Michael Rama

University of Cebu owner Augusto Go has ordered flags in all his school campuses to be lowered to half mast and special prayers be held in school to pay tribute to the late former President Corazon "Cory" Aquino. "Cory is a great loss to the Filipino people. She was an inspiration, the one who brought back democracy to the Philippines," said Go. He said Aquino served the presidency with honesty and integrity, and everybody looked up to the Philippines at that time. Go said he was thankful for Aquino

WHETHER for council or Congress, Cebu City's first lady Margot Osmeña is shunning politics for now and said she has not decided if she will heed Mayor Tomas Osmeña's wishes for her to run for office. But Margot admitted that she could change her mind in the coming months and finally decide to run, if the circumstances call for it. Mayor Osmeña earlier said that either he, Margot or his sister Minnie would run for the south district's congressional seat against local opposition leader Jonathan Guardo.

Tommy will not force me to do something I don’t want. So should there come a time—like I always say now, No—but should there come a time when things are different, I will not say it’s because Tommy wanted me to do it. I have to want to do it, too. I think that is why Tommy and I respect each other   -Margot Osmena

But Talamban Barangay Captain Alvin Arcilla said that should Cuenco decide to run for mayor, he should lay down his platform of government and show the north district constituents what he has done for the south district. Local opposition leader Jonathan "Atan" Guardo yesterday said the proposed Antonio Cuenco-Alvin Garcia pairing for the Cebu City Hall has elicited positive feedback from barangay captains, political leaders, business and among their ranks. "Everyone has been saying it is a very powerf
